To the moderator my name is Farah Cheema, i had no idea about media. However since i have been taking the course i have learnt many skill such as learning how to use to the software, about the different media publications, what they have to offer and the different conventions of the media magazine industry and how they aim it toward their target audience. I want to thank you for taking your time to read my blog, i hope you like what you have read and see how much i have progressed throughout the process.

explaination of editing process

I showed how what i edited pictures from and to, you can see how editing pictures can change the look of a magazine and how it can look professional and not professional of i wasn't to edit the pictures it would of looked scruffy and not like a professional magazine.

This is the picture i chose for my double page spread, i fevered it and made it brighter and changed the contrast this made it seem more effective.

I croped this image and fevered it, i also rotated it because i wanted it to stand out in the magazine as it is a promotion i even put a border round it as it is a poster.

Editing picture

I didn't need to edit this picture as much i just had to cute out the background to make sure it looks professional.

Editing Skills

 

This is the process of editing the picture, i croped out the background and made the picture lighter, increased the contrast and situration. By doing this it made the picture seem more professional as i couldn't put a picture up with the background up.

This is process of editing his picture using photoshop for the contents page as you can see i had to crop the picture, i then fevered it and made it brighter after this i changed the colour to black and white which gave it more of an effect to go with my other image on my contents page and to go with the house style.

Barcode

This is how i presented my barcode, I wanted it to be different rather than it just being on the bottom. It consists of 4 shapes one was for the background another one was the circle to emphasis the website and the other two was a rectangle one behind BIVE and the other one at the top. As well as the barcode it presents the price, the website and a statement.

I was going to use Ricardo as a main part of my magazine, he was going to be the main person featured on my double page spread and was going to be included in the front cover on the side. However i changed my story and didn't have space for him fit in with the magazines so i didn't choose these images. However as you can see i took a different range of photos with different angles and effects to represent different moods.

font

I chose stencil std as my font, i thought that it stood out and would attract the audiences attention, it looks professional and also gives the magazine a good structure. The font i used for the title and headings was microsoft phagspa, it is a very bold eye catching font that would be able to be noticed from a far distance, it is also a unique type of font.

 

 

 

Colour scheme

I was debating whether to create a grey banner on my front cover page as I was going to make my double page spread grey to go with the smokey effect picture. However I did not chose to do so because it looked unprofessional.
The reason I was debating whether to change it was because I wanted an extra colour in the magazine rather than it being black, white and red but I was still going to keep the font as the same colours.

Here are a lot of the photos I took from different angles which represent different stories, it was hard to choose which pictures I wanted in my magazine but I knew I wanted it took look professional and sensible so I chose the pictures which I thought was best suited.

Learning how to use photoshop

I have ever used photoshop before this was a completely new software for me, it was difficult at first but within time I learnt how to use it, each time I used photoshop I learnt new skills as it is a hard software to get use to. However once you have the hang of it it is easy to pick up new skills. I can now say that I am confident to use the software.

Why I didn't chose this picture

The reason i did not choose this image was because their eyes are not focused on the camera which may imply that they are not focused on their audience, their body structure is also unprofessional and looks laid back which gives a bad impressions.

Planning

This is a list of shots that I wanted to take and a list of props and make up I wanted. However some of it did not go as I planned it but It did guide me and gave me I rough estimate of what I I was expected to do for my magazine.

I learnt that planning is a crucial part otherwise I wouldn't of known where to start from and what props or make up I would need.

Double page spread article

My double page spread is an exclusive first and last personal interview that will be broadcasted, it will include an image of one of the members meeting some of her fans, there is not any pictures of the two members as they are announcing that they have broke up and are not even on talking terms.

I chose this picture to put on my double page spread because everyone is wearing their indivdual clothes which reflects on their personality, it shows what type of fashion that people are into when they listen to hip hop. It is also one of the only pictures i have with one of the members of the band meeting her fans.

 

This is the picture once i edited it, it makes it brighter and gives it a smokey effect to the picture.

Magazine research

I researched vibe magazines for an inspiration as apart of my magazine, vibe magazine aims at music artists for teenagers it usually features hip hop music which is what my magazine is about, the layout is simple and straight forward which is what i would like mine to be like.

Vibe magazine inspirited me to create my magazine as it has the same aims and objectives as my magazine, it is a really popular magazine as of June 30, 2012, vibe had a circulation of 300, 943, of which 202, 439 was paid and 98,504 was non paid this is a good figure.

I chose to look at vibe magazines and get ideas from them as it is similar to the one that i want to create due to the fact of having the same audience but it also has the same genre of music which the magazine is mainly focused on. Vibe is one of the nations most leading popular magazine.

Vibe has two tough competitive XXL and the source which are focused on the same genre of music which are hip hop and R&B. However the source has it own problems as they are struggling with money to fund it, they were going through bankruptcy and emerging under new ownership last year.

Draft front cover

Having a draft helped me a lot and made things as I knew what pictures I needed to take, what size I need to crop it own to and how the layout of the text would be. However I have changed quit a bit from my draft, without a draft I wouldn't of known where to start from and it would of taken me longer to think of ideas on photoshop. The same applies for the contents page and double page spread.

I chose these articles and stories from what my audience profile looks for and what I think that they would want to expect within the magazine, I also looked up similar magazines to get ideas from them.

Anaylisis 3

The masthead is capital letters in red stating it is NME, it is the only red font on the cover it stands out and catches the reader’s eye, and the cover is modern and up to date. The masthead is on the left hand side which allows there to be more space for other item to fit on the magazine. However the sign is covered up which has an effect on the magazine because it implies that people should know the name of the magazine, it states that there is unseen photos which makes the readers want to purchase this copy it also says that it is exclusive which means that it is only in this magazine furthermore it makes the target audience want to purchase this issue. It is aimed at young students who are able to buy every issue.
The banner is bright and stands out the word special is appealing towards the audience it also says part 1 which implies that there is a second addition encouraging readers to buy it.

The picture is a medium shot of Liam Gallager with  text around his body, this is aimed at both gender. He has a serious look on his face which implicated that there is more to this magazine than what is on the front cover; it suggests for readers to not judge and read through the magazine.

The contents page is called this week instead of the contents page which is more laid back. The colour scheme is white, black, yellow and red which is the usual colour scheme for many magazines, the page is very busy with only two pictures in the centre. However fans of oasis are more than likely to get attracted to this issue of NME the caption states that 'oasis kicked off their world touch' which would make the fans want to read further on and find out what happened during the tour. The contents page also includes that subscribers will save 33% which would save their money and getting the information at the same time, it also states that there is a website which may include things that the magazine don't. 'THE UK NO1 GIG GUIDE' the wording of the statement would be a big selling point as it is the best selling guide available.

The picture covers half of the double page spread suggesting who the article is going to be focused on, it is a close mid shot of Liam Gallagher. The colour scheme is white, grey, pink, blue and yellow which is a change from the usual red white, black and yellow; the picture is of Liam Gallager it has an indie dual look to it he is also wearing the same clothes as he is in the front cover, the picture helps the font stand out as it is in different colours he still has the serious look on his face as he did on the front cover too. However he is looking away and looks sad which suggests that there is more to the story, this would encourage people to read further on.

The title is blue with yellow edges stating his name which would encourage fans to read on. There is a boost on top of the edge of his name on the right hand 2012 biggest album with studio special' which would attract the audience’s attention especially if it has the word special in it and biggest as people would think its something different and if its the biggest nowhere else can be better than that.

The first letter of the body text is in a blue circle with a yellow front highlighted black around the edges, this grabs the audience’s attention and tells them where to start of reading the article. The house style is the same as the rest of double page spread. There is a pink shape in the middle of the article. However the writing which is included in the shape has nothing to do with the article but the audience might of felt as if they got something extra.

There is a lot of space at the top of the page this emphasis the title there is also a border this is usually used in conventional magazines.

Magazine publisher

For my magazine to get published I would choose Bauer as they publish magazine which are similar to mine such as vibe, that is one of the main hip hop magazines that there is, they are in competition with source and XXL which are also published by Bauer, I think it will help the magazine be promoted and become a successful magazine.

I learnt about the different publishers and how they promote their magazines this helped me because I got an understanding of how different publishers work, I looked into Bauer even more so that I can apply the same methods towards my audience. It is a hard decision to pick between the both as they are both very popular publishing house both pic and Bauer but after I done my research I decided which one would be best for my magazine.

Music magazine pitch

Your monthly music

Genre: the genre of my magazine is hip hop. I chose this genre because it relates to me, it is what I am interested in and get inspired by I feel like it is also a popular genre that many people enjoy to listen and read about.

Weekly price: I have chosen to sell my magazine weekly as I have aimed it at teenagers who would be able to buy it every week as they would want to find out the gossip as soon as they can, I've chosen to sell it £1:50 which i reckon is a reasonable price for teenagers.

Audience: my audience will be middle class people from the age of 13-20 year olds who are interested in listening to hip hop music, it aimed at both genders mainly because it doesn't have a specific gender to aim it at it is aimed at people who enjoy listening to hip hop. However the artist usually have concerts which are 16+ sometimes so this would be aimed at older people.

Audience profile: the audience I aiming my magazine at would be into new fast, loud music with a big beat and bass to it, gossip about the celebrities, concerts, signing from the artists, some people may want books of the history of how hip hop started and became so big, there will also be selections of clothes from the artist as the audience like to imitate the actions of what their idol does. My magazine contains a lot about the artists and gossip which is what they expect.

Name: I wanted my name to be original and four letters long. I chose the name BIVE I thought that this was short and snappy, majority of magazines are at the most four letters long as a title. I thought that four letters looks good in the layout and is the right amount of letters to cover the top of the magazine and still be clear.

House, style, font, colours: my colour scheme will be black, red and white I reckon that these three colours match very well and can make certain things stand out more than others. My title is bold so that it stands out and if I have a heading I have a shape behind it which makes it stand out more.

Double page spread: I have planned to have an interview with the band and get the inside gossip of why the bad broke up and about their personal life rather than hearing different types of stories, there will also be a picture of one of the band members meeting fans which is unseen, this will hopefully set the fans straight of what is happening to the both of them and if they are making anymore music together or solo.

Offers: There will be a poster in the inside as we'll as competitions for people to win signed t-shirts by both members of the band another competition would be to win a free cd signed by them.

Usp: This magazine is different to others because it is ahead with the gossip, it is the most up to date magazine.

By creating a magazine pitch it helped me decide what ideas I should use in my magazine and what it is going to be about, it taught me that planning makes things easier and that is vital.

Double page spread analysis 2

The double page spread contains 3 columns full of text. However the spread is not full of text which influences individuals to read it. The double page spread features Florence, she is posing very feminine which grabs woman's attention she is sitting on red and white cloth which is even more feminine, her name is in blue which stands out, the red and white from the cloth and the blue from her name is the same colours as the American flag which is where Florence I from this is a good connection. The double page spread does not state where it is from but you can tell that it is from there from the layout of the text, the picture dominates most of the text again just like the front cover.

Contents page analysis 2

The master head for the contents page is rather conventional, the columns are tidy which fits in with the smart theme, the heading is small. The photograph featuring an artist (Beatles) each heading is underlined making the layout look sophisticated with a brief description below telling the readers what the magazine contains, the pictures are also neatly placed. This contents page is aimed at intellectual individuals, yet again q does not state that it is from them but you can tell, from the colour scheme, the headings stand out from the red underline.

Analysis 2 front cover

The front cover is eye catching by the red bright colours. q is enlarged to state what magazine it is. The text is a classic font. However the picture dominates the text. The magazine would attract men more than woman as Cheryl cole is on the cover, the red represent romance which may also grab mens attention more than woman as they may think they can get a girl similar to Cheryl cole. The front cover states that it all about music and main stream. Rock is enlarged for it to stand out which is unusual for q as they do not usually do this with other issues, the colour scheme is red white and black, white and black are dual colours the red is put into place for the issue to stand out. The colour scheme is effective and is put into place so that it attracts the correct audience.

I picked these ideas from looking at VIBE magazine and seeing what individuals like to read in there as it is a similar magazine to mine.

Anaylsis 1 front cover, contents page and DPS

On this issue of VIBE magazine the colour scheme is pink and blue with a grey tint to it, some of these colours should appear on the contents and double page spread to show that it is apart of the same issue.

The title is large and bold in order to catch the audiences attention, the cover has the same font. However the font are different sizes, some of the font is enlarged to grab the audiences attention like the title. The text has three different colours.

The cover artist is Kayne West a popular hip hop artist, the photograph is a close up shot this is used so that the audience can see his facial expressions.

The contents page consists of a large middle shot of the artist which takes up most of the space of the contents page, the image is black and white which is quite weird considering the front cover of the magazine was full of colours this. However the heart is colourful being held by a woman who is hidden, she is hidden to grab the readers attention as it is a mystery, the heart is full of colour which represents the rest of the magazine is juicy.

The title "contents" is black and bold it easy to read. However the rest of the text is small and unable for readers to read from a distance which is makes them want to pick up the magazine and read it, this implies that is aimed at a mature age group.

Kanyne west has no facial expression on the front cover nor the contents page i reckon this was done on purpose so that the readers will read on and find out what the story is behind his blank expression.

 The double page spread features Solange knowles. She is in a bright red dress which grabs the audiences attention, the colours that are used for the text are blue and black which links back to the front cover and the black and white pictures link with the contents page as it is all grey and the heart is red which links to her dress. The layout is simple but there is a lot of writing which implies that is set for a mature age group of audience.

I chose to analysis VIBE magazine, the front cover, contents page and double spread are apart of the same issue. The reason why i chose to analysis this magazine is because it is similar to mine and i find it an interesting magazine it is also has a high rate of population which therefore means many people share the same interests.

research for my magazine

Listening to naughty by nature inspired me to create a hip hop magazine. They are a band which developed in 2000 they do not have many songs. However the songs they do have are rather good, they disappeared through out some months but they always had a come back with a new single which sometimes featured other artists such as pitball. Naughty by nature is an old band with different melody's in the background, it is different to the typical hip hop type now.

By doing this research i learnt that this is the type of music i would like to feature in my magazine because i have a big interest in them.

Research for the preliminary

This is the reseach i done for my preliminary task, i thought it would be a good idea to get images of what school magazines look like as it was my first attempt of creating a magazine. By doing this i saw the different techniques that they used and tried to use this, it helped me create my magazine.
